It’s no secret that I love smoothies for kids, but one thing I am constantly struggling with is my oldest son. To say he is picky when it comes to food would be an understatement. At the age of four he noticed when I switched brands of yellow mustard, without seeing the container. Yep, my little guy is a bit of a foodie himself and he knows exactly what he likes.
It’s not uncommon to ask him what he wants for lunch and to get an answer along the lines of “I’d like a veggie burger with just a little bit of melted cheese – not to much so it goes over the side. On a whole wheat sandwich thin that’s toasted – but not brown. And I’d like strawberries, whole, with just the green part cut off. And carrots, but I don’t want the whole carrots cut up, I want baby carrots.”
I know I should be proud of his ability to tell me exactly what he wants, but I admit that it can be frustrating. Especially when I’m testing out smoothies for kids and I’ve created a smoothie recipe that I love, his little brother loves and he won’t touch.
I’m happy to say that he loved this recipe – but of course we had to make it over for him once.
When I started out, I just tossed the white chocolate chips into the blender, not accounting for the fact that they may not get fully integrated into the smoothie. He wasn’t having any of the chunky texture, so his little brother got that one. Next, I grated the chocolate with a fine grater and he loved the subtle chocolate flavor and drank the entire smoothie!
